iPLAY : Masquerade Skits

This is our Masquerade Skit Madness! Every convention that iPLAY wanders to, we also make plans to enter the masquerade and kill ourselves in the process! On this page, you'll be able to go through archives of our past skits and wonder what on earth was going on through our heads when we came up with these things...

Tales of Phantasia
Anime Expo 2000

Cast List:
Ci-Ci-O as Cless Alvein
Ten Ken as Mint Adnade
Kamui as Klarth F. Lester
Makkura as Arche Klaine
Yukito as Suzu Fujibayashi
Mike as Chester Barklight

Awards: Presentation Honorable Mention

iPLAY's first skit involved coordination among six relatively inexperienced cosplayers, coming together in a random fighting/dancing battle! (yes, those are DDR arrows) We had a lot of help along the way from family and friends, and were absolutely honored to win an award at our first masquerade ever. Our name popped up in the AX Newsletter the next morning, with comments to the effect of "judges honored this random skit that for some reason had people fighting each other and then dancing". Unfortunately, we had so fun that we made many more masquerade plans for the future!

Candidate for Goddess
Comic World LA 1

Cast List:
Karrie as Zero Enna

Ten Ken as Kizuna Towryk

Awards: None!

This doesn't qualify so much as a masquerade as it was just a simple costume contest at a tiny event, but for the purposes of chronicling our experience, here it is. XD

Pokemon / Gary's Cheerleaders
Ani-Magic 2000

Cast List:
Ci-Ci-O, Ten Ken, Karrie, Makkura, Gen-chan, and Victoria as Gary's Cheerleaders "A-F"
Wayne Kaa as Gary Oak

Awards: Pimp Daddy Judge's Award

This skit was completely random and came about due to Karrie and Ten Ken's provoking of Wayne. (And consequently, this was totally his fault! And don't believe him if he tells you otherwise.) So a skit ensued where us 6 girls pretended to be enthralled by Wayne's charms (yeah, it required much acting XD) and sang and danced to a modified version of "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil. It was fun; we all learned some cheerleader movies and had a convenient excuse to go watch Bring It On, which came out that summer. ("We're doing research!") And the skit was never to be spoken of ever again by iPLAY, except apparently it lives on in infamy with Ani-Magic staff. This also set the "do insanely random skits at AM masquerade" tradition that lives on to this day!

Guilty Gear X
Fanime 2001

Cast List:
Karrie as Testament
Ten Ken as May
Gen-chan as Baiken
Makkura as Axl Low
Ha-chan as Cadberry Jam

Ashita as Ky Kiske
Aero Strife as Sol Badguy
EnnuiX as Venom
Fiona as Millia Rage
Justin as Chipp

Awards: none!

This was the masquerade skit where we got overly ambitious, invited all our friends, and barely rehearsed. It was still a highly creative skit, but things got too complicated and subsequently the audience had barely any idea what was going on. *L* The premise was a Dreamcast-centric game tribute, wrapping up Guilty Gear X, Puyo Puyo, Jet Set Radio, and Space Channel 5 all into one. Fighting and dancing ensued (see a pattern?). This was also the masquerade where all cosplayers were stuck in a tiny hallway with a few chairs for hours, Karrie burned herself quite fantastically with a high temp glue gun, and other unpleasantries. It was a good lesson learned (read: never to do anything like this again)!

Digimon Season 02
Ani-Magic 2001

Cast List:
Ha-chan as Hikari Yagami
Ten Ken as Takeru Takaishi
Kamui as Goth TK
Makkura as Taichi Yagami (season 01)

Fiona as Daisuke Motomiya

Awards: Best Group

Our Digimon skit was our first dialogue/story skit! There was no dancing at all (to everyone's relief). It was a random mish-mash of anime references, with Hikari discovering a random clow wand and invoking a number of random Clow cards. Yaoi references were made, stuffed animals shoved down people's pants, Rey Rey was made fun of.. all that good stuff. It got a great audience reaction and was incredibly fun to perform. This was our biggest award so far!

King of Fighters
Comic World LA 2

Cast List:
Karrie as Athena Asamiya

Wayne as Kensou

Awards: 3rd Place! Or something (I don't remember XD)

Again.. tiny costume contest at a tiny event (year 2). XD

Dewprism / Threads of Fate
Fanime 2002

Cast List:
Karrie as Rue

BabySnowLeopard as Mint
General Phavorianne as Maya
Pikacello as Claire

Awards: Group Craftsmanship

Karrie teamed up with the Neko twins and Pikacello (of Ramen and Rice fame) to cosplay as characters from Dewprism, a Squaresoft game that hasn't gotten enough love! A silly skit was conceived to poke fun at Final Fantasy and other random stuff (as usual), and was even later cited by the masquerade MC as an example of what a good skit consists of! =D

there's a picture somewhere, I swear...
"Sexy Commando"
Fanime 2002

Cast List:
Ha-chan as Killua

Uh, bunch of other people including Makkura, Sarah, Mikey, Matto-kun, Ten Ken, and etc.

Random skit put together last minute to capitalize on Fanime's masquerade registration still being open late into the convention. Based on the fact that Mikey needed to pull his pants down on stage. XD

Awards: None!

Morning Musume - The Peace!
Fanime 2002

Cast List:
Karrie as Abe Natsumi

Tiff, Ami, Kie, Lily, Diana, Allison, Hi-chan, Kix, Jaymie, and Wayne as the other USA Musume girls & Director

Performed as a part of USA Musume.

Awards: Technical Achievement

Yes, Karrie was apart of two skits at the Fanime 2002 masquerade! This was her first collaboration with USA Musume (and consequently their first project), which involved a lot of confetti dot and yellow feathers. The Peace! is a really weird song since the PV for the song involves light-up urinals, but uh.. it was a fun song to perform. X3

Yami no Matsuei
Anime Expo 2002

Cast List:
Makkura as Sohryuu
Ha-chan as Kijin
Karrie as Kurikara
Gen-chan as Suzaku

ikandi as Doll Veronica
CrackPr0n as little boy Muraki

Awards: none!

A hugely ambitious project of ours which in the end turned out to be a little more than we could handle since the costumes were quite complex! Much of the group was formed in order to accomodate an angsty skit idea, where the symbolism of Muraki and his dolls were played out. All the costumes were extremely obscure and thus the audience had no idea what was going on, but it was great fun nonetheless. XD

Sailormoon
San Diego Comic Con 2002

Cast List:
Karrie as Black Lady

Wayne (Demando), Jason (Wiseman/Jack), Hi-chan (Sailormoon), Kie (Sailor Mars), Lily (Emeraude), Genjitsu (Sapphiru), and Ennui (Rubeus)

Awards: none!

This skit was a farce and never happened. I wasn't even at Comic Con this year, and neither was Hi-chan! XD *whistles and runs*

Naruto
Ani-Magic 2002

Cast List:
Makkura as Naruto
Ha-chan as Sakura
Karrie as Sasuke
Gen-chan as "Sexy No Jutsu"

Wayne was Samurai Jack XD

Awards: none!

Again, a "why not compete?" moment at Ani-Magic. A soundtrack was found in Wayne's car (Barbie Girl, by Aqua). A crappy two second skit was formulated, and despite efforts by Naruto and Sasuke, Samurai Jack is just simply too powerful for them and Jack wins the girl at the end.

Renai Revolution 21
Fanime 2003

Cast List:
Karrie as Nakazawa Yuko

Tiff, Ami, Kie, Lily, Kimi, Kix, Phi, Mandy Mitchell, Annie, and Wayne as the other Morning Musume girls & director

Performed as a part of USA Musume.

Awards: none!

Karrie collaborated with USA Musume for a vinyl-filled, live vocals performance of Morning Musume's popular song, Renai Revolution 21. Lots of rehearsals were necessary, and involved cross-coordination with members from both northern and southern California. For more information, see the USA Musume webpage!

"Samurai Shodown"
Ani-Magic 2003

Cast List:
Ha-chan as Nakoruru
Karrie as Rimururu

Udonboy as Neo (Matrix)
Phi, Ener, Hai, Kix, Mikey, Helen, Kabukiboy, and Juan as misc. extras(^^;)

Awards: Most Humorous (for Kabukiboy and Juan only)

Continuing in the tradition of nonsensical skits for Ani-Magic, this skit consisted of Nakoruru and Rimururu facing off against Neo, and tons of random extras milling about the stage for good measure. Nothing had much to do with each other, but it was hilarious fun to get so many people involved in a skit. Surprisingly enough, the judges decided to give the Most Humorous award to Kabukiboy and Juan, who were dressed as drunk salarymen and were basically standing around on stage in a drunken stupor.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
Anime Expo 2004

Cast List:
Karrie as Sakura
Makkura as Tomoyo
Ha-chan as Yuuko
Gen-chan as Nako-Nako (Pretty Guardian Sailormoon)

Phi as Shaoran

Awards: Best Group Craftsmanship Runner-Up

These costumes were completely insane to make in the small amount of time that we had to make them in, but they turned out well! The skit was entitled "A Fairytale Gone Wrong" and cast Shaoran as a pervert (which Phi was great at!), Sakura and Tomoyo as sisters, Yuuko as their mother, and Nako-Nako as a random monster. Hey, anyway you can get random characters to interact, no? XD

Kingdom Hearts
Anime Expo 2005

Cast List:
Cici as Kairi
Karrie as Cloud
Ha-chan as Halloween Town Sora
Makkura as Pirate Heartless

Phi as Sora
Rene as Roxas
Pekkle as Unknown
Lithele as Yuffie
Kix as Selphie

Awards: 2nd Place Overall and Best Group Craftsmanship

This masquerade entry formed around Karrie's desire to get AKG to compete in their Kingdom Hearts costumes because they rocked so hard. At the time, we could not stop making fun of the brilliant writing in certain "awesome" love scenes in the most recent Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3 movies, so somehow that all got mishmashed into a skit that continues the story from where Kingdom Hearts 1 left off. Watch and see Phi be a pervert (again), and learn who Sora's real father is! The best part of it all - Karrie writing up the skit in the week before masquerade soundtracks were due, and thinking that no one except our little group would find any of it hilarious, despite the rest of the group telling her that she was lame to think so. She's glad to be proved wrong!

Puyo Puyo
Fanime 2006

Cast List:
Makkura as Satan
Ha-chan as Rulue
Karrie as Draco

Backup Dancers:
Gen-chan as Samurai (Disgaea)
Phi as Sora (Kingdom Hearts II)
Ener as Roxas (Kingdom Hearts II)
Lithele as Unknown (Kingdom Hearts II)

Awards: Judges Award, Performance

A week before the convention, Karrie realized that while we were entered in the masquerade, we had not even started thinking about a skit! Since we were completely and irrationally obsessed with the Algorithm March at the time, Gen-chan, Ha-chan, and Makkura suggested performing it. We managed to finagle Phi, Ener, and Lisa into yet another masquerade skit and amused the judges enough to snag a completely unexpected award! The judges praised it as being cute, short, and all-around fun skit.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
Anime Expo 2006

Cast List:
Makkura as Yukito
Ha-chan as Touya
Karrie as Ashura

Aya Mizu as Sakura
Hi-chan as Chii

Awards: Best Group Craftsmanship

Despite reservations about cosplaying from the same series at AX masquerade again, we were so inspired by the images on the Tsubasa hard-cover manga that we decided it was okay since all the costumes were different! We also teamed up with Aya and Hi-chan for the first time in a masquerade (excluding USA Musume team-ups) and 110 yards of fabric later (no joke), we were honored with Best Group Craftsmanship for the second year in a row! Karrie finally got to indulge her idea that Aqua's cute song "My Oh My" seemed to fit a Tsubasa skit perfectly!
